Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked taking part in various card games when he was young. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly play against each other. He was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the best women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
