Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked taking part in various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The real improvement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently wager against each other. He was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, he would hone his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
