Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to discover anything he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse comments from other people destroy his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

He began competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated many of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an undying love for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. He admits to making mistakes in each session of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Despite the fact that Phil has won some large tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
