Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to discover every little thing he could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the detrimental comments from other people annihilate his dream of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.

Phil started competing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a regular outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his success. He admits to making blunders every single game of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
