Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The definite improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. He had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
