Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. The definite improvement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly play against one another. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
